Raffy Reavis on the Way Out?

Raffy Reavis

When news came out on 13 September 2008 that Barangay Ginebra coach Jong Uichico publicly announced that he wanted to get his hands on either Asi Taulava of Coca-Cola or Yancy De Ocampo of Talk 'N Text, rumors where again flowing from almost everywhere that Raffy Reavis was being dangled as a possible trade bait.

The need for a legitimate, pure center in the mold of Chris Alexander - Ginebra's import last conference who was instrumental in helping the team win the best-of-seven championship series against Air21 - was recognized by coach Uichico as the biggest factor in order for the Gin Kings to be a force in the coming Philippine Cup.

Reavis name cropped up since it is widely known that Talk 'N Text coach Chot Reyes was trying to get a hold of the 6'8" gangly slotman for years now. Coach Reyes was reportedly impressed by Reavis' athleticism and tenacious boardwork ever since the Coca-Cola Tigers drafted him in 2002. He was also a member of the 2002 and 2003 Tigers championship team, which was, ironically, coached then by Reyes.

In 2006 the former Most Improved Player was involved in a three-team trade involving former sister team Barangay Ginebra Kings and Air21 Express in one of the most celebrated and controversial transactions in the league. Under the deal, the Tigers dealt Rafi Reavis, Billy Mamaril and the rights to Rudy Hatfield to Ginebra. The Kings sent Aries Dimaunahan and Ervin Sotto, along with future draft picks to Air21 while Coca-Cola received Kalani Ferreria from Brgy. Ginebra, Ryan Bernardo from Air21 and Manny Ramos (initially from Ginebra but was received from Air21 under the revised version of the deal).

For now, there is only one problem in dealing Reavis for Ocampo. Talk 'N Text seems to be still holding out and reports had it that they are still trying to secure a much better offer. Maybe the inclusion of some future picks from the Gins.

"We have sent feelers (to their mother teams)," Uichico told the Inquirer in an overseas interview while in Hong Kong vacationing with his family. "The problem is, they don't seem to want to trade with us."

Originally, Uichico was batting for Jay Washington also of the Phone Pals, but their sister team, San Miguel Beer, beat them to the punch by offering their first round draft pick last 31 August 2008, which turned out to be Jason Castro.

Next, Uichico wanted to entice Mich Pinnisi of Red Bull, but again San Miguel Beer offered a better option for the Barakos - rights to their two future drafts picks.

At this time, the Gins is not in any good position to get a decent trade from the other teams since they are not willing to make any compromise when it comes to their dynamic backcourt duo of Mark Caguioa and JayJay Helterbrand. Unless they involved their two sister teams, San Miguel Beer and Purefoods, in the deal, Taulava and Ocampo are not expected to go anywhere.
